Mental Health Awareness Letters – 30th May 2018

As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, I had an idea to write a letter each day to a person, or group of people that have had an impact on my own personal health. The first portion of the month has been delayed, however I hope that I will catch up and there will be a daily post. Thank You for taking the time to read these and I appreciate any comments or support you can provide on each post.

Please remember that if you are struggling with your health, both physical or mental, there may be some triggers in these letters-please seek support if you find these letters trigger any distress. Look after yourself!!

Letter 30 – To MIND

Mind has really helped me over the last few months and I am so glad they are there. I have used their InfoLine, Legal Line and have some email addresses and telephone numbers for support.

There is also the chance to get involved, volunteer and fundraise.

Visit https://www.mind.org.uk/ for help and support if you are struggling with your mental health or supporting someone else.

You will also see my face in the Stories section;

There is also the online support community Elefriends (seriously, give them a visit)

Mind really do not give up until they are able to help you, unlike several other services that say they do not give up or judge, but actually do.

Thank You Mind, for being there, helping me and allowing me the chance to speak up.

Mental Health Awareness Letters – 9th May 2018

Letter 9 – To my dogs.

My little ‘Mexican Shits’ who like to go out and then come in and pee by the back door!!

You cuddle me and show affection. I talk to you and feel that you listen and understand. People may think I am crazy but if you have never owned a dog you wouldn’t understand (unless you do not like dogs, but you have an equally loving cat or another animal). Science proves that being near a pet can help your mental and physical health as well as helping the animals’ health.

I had dogs on and off growing up but for years I wanted a Chihuahua, they are small and cute and feisty little things, with their little tails and little ears and bubbly personality I loved them.

We got our first girl from Gumtree and whilst she had been with this family for a week or two she was still young, most probably too young to be away from her Mam, but I had to have her!! We now have another puppy, found on the internet from a breeder-they have a love hate relationship and love to wind each other up, but they do love each other and there is nothing I love more when I am having a bad day that cwtches from these two.

It may sound silly, but my dogs definitely have saved me!! I love them!!

People may call Chihuahuas ‘rats’ but they are one of the most loyal and loving breeds I have ever known.

Letter 8 – To those of you that support me.

This is a letter to those have had the most positive effect on my Mental Health in recent months. YOU!! You my readers.

I am part of an amazing online community of people with both physical and mental health struggles, as well as University Students with the same difficulties – I have never met any of you but you have been so supportive. There are also an amazing group of you that have no struggles, yet empathise so much with my journey.

The Versatile Blogger Award

I have been quiet the past few days-I have reverted back to my very much hated nocturnal state. But I am back!!

nervous friends GIF

I Hate you nocturnal brain!!

Firstly I would like to thank ‘Babbling Mummy’ for nominating me for The Versatile Bloggers Award!! For those of you that do not know about the award; you get nominated by other bloggers for your blog. Once nominated, you thank them as I have just done (although that is the kind thing to do isn’t it?) and write a short post with some facts about yourself, before nominating other bloggers for the award.

8 Facts about Myself

  1. I really hate certain noises. Also known as Misophonia (although I am not officially diagnosed-one thing at a time!) But do not come near me and crack bones, grind teeth or chew loudly with your mouth open because it makes me feel physically sick.
  2. I Love learning new languages. I speak 2 fluent languages, 1 at an intermediate level and 4 languages I learned when younger and was either fluent or nearly fluent in. I wish I knew so many more languages.
  3. I despise odd Numbers. Really, actually hate them – when I had an eating disorder I couldn’t eat rice without counting the grains.
  4. I was raised as the oldest child, but I actually have an older brother. Plus 3 older half-siblings.
  5. I can easily rewatch the same programme/movie again and again. I don’t think my wife really gets it!! I will happily watch Grey’s Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory, Harry Potter Movies and Friends back to back!!
  6. My dream job would involve mental health, animals and work to my own schedule-ideally from home.
  7. I love watching scary films but equally hate watching them – I am too jumpy and paranoid about reliving the films so I avoid them. Especially when they involve jumpy moments when there’s nothing and then suddenly a scary child screaming at you.  Or the one moment in Harry Potter that scares the daylight out of me – when Harry and Hermione visit Godric’s Hollow and that stupid snake jumps up at the camera!!
  8. I have a massive bucket list (I am planning a post for this in the future) but my top 5 completed bucket list tasks are:
  • Get my wood beads.
  • Achieve my Explorer Belt.
  • Achieve my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.
  • Visit Buckingham Palace. (I was awarded my DofE in the Gardens)
  • Live abroad for 6 months to volunteer.

My nominations

Here are my nominations for bloggers that I have discovered that I love to follow and I think they deserve some recognition for their work and writing.

Aril 26th, 2018 – Daily Prompt=Cur….

I definitely had to google what this word meant.

Cur = Apparently it means a ‘mongrel’ or ‘mixed breed dog’ but can also refer to an unfriendly dog.

I love dogs. Some of them do scare me a bit and they can do bad things, but so can humans. I always remember being around dogs, growing up we definitely always had some cats (sometimes a lot of cats) but I remember having dogs in my life, some years there was only cats but for the majority of the time there were also dogs ( and rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and fish!!).

Jessie and Nala

How can you call them rats??

Now I am married and we have our own home and 2 dogs. They are not mixed breed dogs but people still call them ‘rats’. The truth is they are my babies, especially as I have no living children and have fertility difficulties. They help my mental health so much and I think if they weren’t here I would be a more impulsive and even sadder person.

Some people call themselves a “people person” – whilst I love helping others and being around people I would also prefer to be surrounded by my dogs, they are less judgemental and understand feelings. If I am having a quiet/sad/melancholy day people tend to just not say anything, whereas a dog always knows.

They always know.

Yesterday….

I said to myself I would try to write for at least a week using the WordPress daily prompts. Yesterday I forgot.

Screen Shot 2018-04-26 at 23.11.53.png

My Facebook Post may explain a little.

April 25th, 2018 not only marked 2 years since my surgery (see April 25th 2018 – 2 Years Post Appendicectomy ), it also marked 15 years since my biological father died.

Due to my complex life history and reasons, I have only just started to explore my past in depth, I never grieved 15 years ago. With everything that has gone on in the last 2 years, my feelings of grief have only just emerged and I am starting the process 15 years on and getting help from available services where I can.

If you are grieving some time after losing someone I have learnt not to feel ashamed for your grief, there were several things stopping me from grieving years ago, it is not my fault I could not explore my feelings and I was not old enough or strong enough to stand up for myself. But I still deserve to grieve. We all do.

Yesterday’s daily word prompt was elaborate;

Thanks Google!!

So I guess my contribution to the topic of elaboration involves my theory surrounding my grief. My childhood wasn’t necessarily unhappy, at the time anyway. Years on I have realised that certain things that happened and ways I was treated were not ‘normal’ and where definitely a cause for concern. I have had a complicated life, exploring it was always going to be a big job but writing this blog does help that. Maybe nobody sees this page, or comments, follows or supports it. But it is my story. My truth. I am not twisting or manipulating the truth, I have been lied to most of my life and I intend to live an honest life. If you do not like it then I am sorry. This is me.

We have been bestowed with a prince!!

Today flags are flying to celebrate a new prince.

Congratulations to Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William; The Duke of Cambridge – And of course to Prince George and Princess Charlotte!!

It is also exciting that Princess Charlotte, whose position in line to the throne will not change with the birth of her little brother; due to a change in the law, has made history.

“Kensington Palace Twitter Account”

I have not added any pictures of the new Prince as I feel it is not my right to share them, but if you browse the news websites and the Kensington Palace twitter account, then there are plenty of images there for you to see. The Prince is beautiful, you can see mam, dad, brother and sister in the young Prince. Beautiful children and a beautiful family.

We have yet to hear about the name that has been given to the new Prince, I wonder if Prince George had a different name, would this Prince be called George? He was born on St George’s Day after all? George, Charlotte and ……..

What name will be bestowed to the new prince?? I cannot wait to find out!!

One goal-An event I really wish to partake in….

April 22nd 2018 – Marathon Day

And No I am not one of the brave people taking part today. However, it is a goal of mine to run in the London Marathon.

Each year I stare at the TV, listen to radio or follow social media and say to myself “Yes I will do this, maybe next year, or the year after to be sensible”. Let’s just say it never happens.

This year I am signed up to do a 10k, 5k and monthly goal of 25 miles (walking or running each month). I want to be a more regular runner and fitter before even considering a full marathon. The plan is to do 5k and 10k runs until I feel comfortable enough to do a half marathon. Once I have done that I will consider longer events.

Although cue the impulsive me-one day I may just do it and sign up (Telling myself don’t you dare!)

Are any of my followers a runner and do you have any tips.
